Eskom is one of the largest procurement spenders in the country and buys across a far wider range than people assume. Alongside turbines and transformers it buys vegetation management, cleaning, guarding, catering, civil repairs and transport, most of it at sites in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.

Where the adverts appear

Eskom tenders are published on the national eTenders portal and on Eskom's own procurement pages, and the two are not always simultaneous. As a state-owned company Eskom also maintains its own supplier database, and registering there is worth doing in addition to your Central Supplier Database registration, not instead of it.

Practically, this means a supplier watching only one channel will be late on some adverts. Aggregating both is the point of an alert service, and it is why we pull the national feed daily rather than asking you to check.

The compliance baseline, plus Eskom's additions

The standard set applies: CSD registration, SARS tax compliance status, B-BBEE evidence. Eskom then adds requirements driven by the fact that most of its work happens inside operating industrial plant.

Compulsory briefings are the usual gate

Site briefings at power stations are common and frequently compulsory. They also require the access clearance mentioned above, which means the effective lead time is longer than the advert suggests: you need clearance to attend the briefing, and the briefing to be eligible to bid.

If Eskom is a target market, start the access and clearance process before a specific tender appears rather than in response to one. This is the single most common reason capable suppliers cannot bid for Eskom work they could easily deliver.

Which categories actually suit smaller suppliers

Generation plant contracts are the wrong target for a small business. The realistic openings are in services and support around the sites, which are continuous, geographically concentrated and less contested by large contractors.

Vegetation management along transmission servitudes, cleaning and hygiene at offices and depots, guarding, minor civil repairs, fencing, transport and general supplies all recur. Subcontracting to prime contractors on large packages is the other route, and Eskom's larger awards carry subcontracting obligations that make prime contractors actively look for partners.

Geography concentrates the opportunity

Eskom's generation fleet is concentrated in Mpumalanga, with further major sites in Limpopo and the Free State, and transmission and distribution assets everywhere. For a services business, proximity to a power station is a genuine competitive advantage, because response time and travel cost both enter the pricing.
