CIDB tenders

Every public-sector construction tender in South Africa must be advertised with a minimum CIDB contractor grading: a combination of a designation from 1 to 9 (contract value capability) and a class of works such as GB (general building), CE (civil engineering), EP (electrical prime) or ME (mechanical engineering). A 1GB contractor can take building contracts up to R500,000, while a 9CE contractor is unlimited in civil works. Knowing which tenders match your grading is the difference between bidding productively and wasting compliance effort.

CIDB-graded tenders flow from every corner of the state: Public Works building maintenance, SANRAL and provincial roads contracts, municipal infrastructure (water, sanitation, paving), housing projects requiring NHBRC registration, and school and clinic construction. The Construction Industry Development Board itself also tenders for its own operational needs. Bidders must hold active CIDB registration at the required grade, be registered on the CSD, and submit tax and B-BBEE compliance documents with each bid.

TenderFinder tracks the eTenders bulletin daily and lets you filter construction tenders by keyword and province, so you only see work worth pricing. Sign up free to unlock full tender documents (including the grading requirements) for every live listing below.

CIDB tenders: frequently asked questions

CIDB grading combines a number (1 to 9, indicating maximum contract value) with a works class like GB or CE. Public construction tenders state a minimum grading, and bids from contractors below it are disqualified, so matching tenders to your grade is essential.
